The Importance of Taking Time for You in the Modern World: Prioritising 10 Minutes Movment Per Day for Longevity

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in endless to-do lists, work deadlines, and the constant pull of digital notifications. Yet, amidst this whirlwind, I’ve discovered that taking just 10 minutes a day for myself can make a profound difference. This small investment in time not only promotes my physical well-being but also supports my mood and productivity.

Whether you spend your days at a desk, or live a more digital nomadic lifestyle carving out this movement moment can transform your life.

Why Prioritising 10 Minutes a Day Matters

When I began to focus on daily movement cycles It became quickly evident that I was no where near a supple as I had expected to be and through years of assuming my lifestyle hadn't affected my body I was very much mistaken.

For everyone taking 10 minutes to move can help you feel more in tune with your body and aware of any aches or pains allowing you to act proactively to any potential injuries. It also acts as an immensely valuable time to focus on relieving stress and tension which you may be holding from work or even the slouchy position that you watch TV to relax of an evening.

The positives I have found from these brief movement moments have been:

  • Improved mental clarity

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Enhanced focus and productivity

  • Better sleep quality

  • Increased Vo2 max

By making this a daily habit, I’m investing in my long-term health and performance. It’s a simple, sustainable way to support my body and mind in a demanding world.

How to Use Your 10 Minutes Effectively

Not all 10-minute breaks are created equal. To truly benefit, I’ve learned to be honest with myself about what my mind and body need and then prioritising this while planning my time :

  1. Mindful breathing or meditation

Sitting quietly and focusing on your breath can calm your nervous system and reduce stress hormones. Even a few deep breaths can shift your mood, while working through these exercises can have a positive effect on your HRV (heart rate variability).

  2. Gentle stretching or mobility exercises

Simple stretches can relieve muscle tightness from sitting or intense training. Focus on areas that feel stiff or sore and encourage yourself to hold positions in a steady manner while practicing breath work to relax further into stretches.

  3. Progressive muscle relaxation

Tense and then release different muscle groups to promote relaxation and body awareness. This practice as a nighttime ritual can help you melt into the bed more effectively and ultimately drift off into a peaceful sleep

  4. Listening to calming music or nature sounds

This can help you unwind and create a peaceful mental space, be mindful to listen tio this music in a calm and relaxing place to gain maximum benefit.

The key is consistency and building this into a habit, with stretching I will do this as my first activity of the day allowing for an effective mind muscle connection before the call of kids pack lunches and school drop off can be heard.

Overcoming Common Barriers to Taking Time for Yourself

As a busy dad of three children all under 12 years old, a full time working wife mixed all in with the training demands of a full distance Ironman i understand that finding this time may feel like an impossible task but the challenge here is to ensure you prioritise it for nobody else but you!

Here are some tips that helped me overcome common obstacles:

  • Schedule your 10 minutes like a meeting

Put it in your calendar and treat it as a fixed appointment.

  • Start small and build gradually

If 10 minutes feels too long, begin with 5 minutes and increase over time and when you feel more confident in the practice.

  • Create a dedicated space

Having a quiet corner or a comfortable chair can make your break more inviting.

  • Use reminders

Set alarms or use apps to prompt you to pause.

  • Communicate your needs

Let colleagues or family know you’re taking this time to recharge.

Remember, this is about quality, not quantity. Even brief moments of self-care can have lasting effects.
